Zoë Philby Art
ABOUT
Zoë Philby was born and raised in the rural Willamette Valley, and currently lives and works in Corvallis, Oregon. She is an artist who combines interdisciplinary interests in science, nature and history within her artworks, expressing them primarily through printmaking and illustration.
She has exhibited nationally thanks to her active involvement with the printmaking community, including shows with SGC International, and the Mid-America Print Council. She was a recipient of the Norma Seibert Printmaking Scholarship, and the Joyce Dickerson Print Scholarship, both in 2018. Most recently, she was an artist-in-residence with the Oceanic Observatories Initiative on their Fall 2018 research voyage aboard the R/V Sally Ride. In 2019, Zoë will receive her BFA in Printmaking, with a minor in Art History.
ARTIST STATEMENT
My art is the intersection of various interdisciplinary interests. For my entire life, I have been fascinated by science and the natural world. Growing up in a rural area of the lush Willamette Valley, I spent most of my time out in the woods among trees and ferns, creating imaginary worlds to entertain myself. Later on, family loss made me realize how temporal life is, and left me with an intense need to preserve things I found precious: from history to stories, both personal and universal.
The natural world remains a deep wellspring of inspiration for me. I use this as a jumping-off point, combining it both with my passion for history, and my desire to create worlds. I choose printmaking as my primary medium because not only does it work well with storytelling, but I believe its nature as a multiple enables me to spread my ideas further.
